Max was a fixture in the shop when it opened in 1984 as Bicycle World Too. He was known as “The Mayor” of Amherst and made his daily rounds collecting popovers, pizza crust and treats from local shops. He also knew to use the crosswalks. In his black and white Tuxedo costume, he was always dressed to impress. When Max died and the business became independent, the store was renamed Laughing Dog in Max’s memory.
Our new dog, Betty Jane, does laugh and smile for the camera. She’s a mutt, just like Max, and appreciates long rides and hikes in the woods, long walks on the beach, and pizza crusts. She’s not too good about crosswalks and in town sidewalk protocol, however. She made it into the Amherst Gazette’s Police Bulletin for getting stuck in wet cement.
